The series was announced on September 4, 2020, at the virtual Crunchyroll Expo.[2] The series was directed by Chikara Sakurai, best known for directing the second season of One-Punch Man. Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki was an executive producer on the series.[8] Kento Shimoyama wrote the series' scripts, Kensuke Ishikawa designed the characters, and Kana Shibue composed the music.[9] The series was animated by Telecom Animation Film with production management by Sola Entertainment.[10] The opening theme is "UNDEAD-NOID" performed by Kashitarō Itō, while the ending theme is "Sympathy" performed by Narudora.[9][5] The series consists of 13 episodes and it aired on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block and was streamed on Crunchyroll from February 6 to May 1, 2022. The English dub of the series was provided by Sentai Filmworks.[4][10][3] The series premiered in Japan on multiple streaming services on April 7, 2022.[7] Shortly after its streaming launch in Japan, it was announced that Tokyo MX would begin broadcasting the series a month later starting on May 3, 2022.[11]

To make matters clear, the Shenmue anime reveals that Suzuki can tell a better Shenmue story in this media format that what he could achieve with a video game three years ago. There are 12 episodes left but the anime already looks like a capable enough medium, -even if an imperfect one- to continue where Shenmue 4 would pick up in the future, and that alone is a huge win.

The series finale premiered on April 30, 2022 and reruns of the series subsequently moved to the 3:00 AM time slot.[7] On July 2nd, there was a 3.5 hour marathon of the series from 12:30-4:00 AM that featured reruns of the first 7 episodes of the series.[8] The series was removed from the block following the August 6, 2022 broadcast and replaced in the lineup by Blade Runner: Black Lotus.
